Back Pain Help - Don't Let It Become Chronic

Don't be afraid to get back pain help. Periodic pain will become chronic if left untreated by a professional. If you fear that proper back care will end up being very expensive, call your local chiropractor and see what you can arrange for a payment plan. If you already have a chronic condition or suspect that you have a disc herniation, be sure to get professional advice right away.

Simply having a severe muscle spasm can cause you pain that makes you think something worse has happened. Yet in many cases, you have over-exerted your back muscles with a sudden non-calculated movement, for example, while twisting or while off balance. The muscles spasm, in order to hold you as still as possible, to protect your back. The misalignment of the spine will probably stay in place unless the muscles are relaxed with ice, some physio therapy, and often some gentle traction.

A severe injury may result in a swollen and inflamed disc, or cushioning tissue, that divides the spinal vertebrae. If the disc swells, it will fill up the space that also accommodates the nerve and spinal ligament. It will press on the nerve, causing pain, and press against the bones, causing more pain, and may squeeze out from in between the adjacent bones. Thus, you have a swollen, inflamed, painful bulging disc, or herniated disc.

Since the nerve is now irritated and hurting, you have the much feared "pinched nerve". Anti-inflammatory drugs can help with extreme situations, but will not repair this condition. Physio therapy and chiropractic care are the ideal choice to get you feeling better.

Spinal decompression is done with a traction table that gently and repeatedly pulls the vertebrae away from the swollen disc. This allows a flow of nutrient-carrying blood and fluids to enter the area and promote healing. Discs that are injured can become dehydrated, so the traction is necessary to remedy this condition.

Regular icing in between treatments is recommended. Always use a fabric covered or towel- wrapped ice pack, use for about fifteen minutes only. Repeat as often as every hour if you can. Never fall asleep on an ice pack. You lose the effect of the treatment by letting it heat up, and after all, you would be sleeping on a bump.

Starting a Private Practice For Therapists and Healers - 10 Essentials For Success

As a counselor, therapist or healer (massage therapist, physiotherapist, alternative health practitioner, etc.) it is quite likely that you did not chose your profession because you wanted to be a business person. As a result, it can be challenging starting a private practice. Taking time to prepare and plan as you are building your private practice will help you avoid costly and time-consuming mistakes. Below are ten areas to address to help ensure your success when starting a private practice.

1. Get Your Life in Excellent Shape

Counselors, therapists and healing professionals know that our personal lives affect our professional lives, yet many who are struggling to market a private practice fail to take this into account. Look at all aspects of your life and determine what seems to be working for you and what needs to change. Determine any activities you need to reduce or eliminate in order to have the time and energy to market your practice. Examine your lifestyle and personal work habits and see where improvement needs to be made. The more your life is on order, the more time and energy you will have for marketing and building a practice.

2. Develop a Financial Plan

Before you start your private practice, assess your financial situation and make a financial plan. Make sure you have funds from other sources until your practice becomes established. Do not put your self in a position where you are desperate to secure clients in order to pay your bills. Potential clients may sense your desperation and may not be eager to hire you. Feeling secure financially will allow you to market and build your practice with greater confidence and ease.

3. Know that You Are a Business Owner

It is essential that you start seeing yourself as a business owner if you haven't made this mind-shift already. You must pay careful attention to all aspects of your business--your revenue and expenses, how you spend your time, methods of attracting clients, and developing operating systems that allow your business to run smoothly.

4. Develop a Vision for Your Practice

It's difficult to get somewhere if you don't know where you are going. Develop a detailed vision of what you want your private practice to look like in 6 months, 1 year and 5 years and write it down. How many clients do you want to have? What days and hours do you want to work? How much income do you need/want? The more clarity and specificity you have, the more likely you will turn your vision into reality.

5. Develop at Least One Specialization

Helping and healing professionals new to private practice often fear that if they are too narrow in the type of services they offer, they will rule out many other potential clients. The opposite is actually more often true as people tend to want to hire specialists. The more targeted you are in marketing your practice, the more you will stand out from others and become known for your expertise. In addition, it's easier to market your practice to a particular group if you know where to find them.

6. Determine Any Negative Attitudes and Fears You Have About Marketing

Many counselors, therapists, and healing professionals are uncomfortable with the marketing aspect of being in private practice. They see their role as to be there for others and not to promote themselves. Our repeated exposure to negative and manipulative types of marketing further contributes to the belief that marketing ourselves is somehow inappropriate. Any negative attitudes and fears you have about marketing a practice need to be eliminated. You can and should find ways to market with integrity and authenticity. Be proud of your services and have confidence that you have something to offer people that they need and want.

7. Develop a Marketing Plan

In order to market your private practice successfully you must have an integrated marketing plan. One of the most common mistakes helping and healing professionals make is trying a few methods of marketing your practice haphazardly, and when the results are not immediate, they erroneously assume the techniques don't work. Flourishing private practices are frequently built upon a number of marketing strategies that work together over time. To market effectively you must make yourself repeatedly visible to potential clients and referral sources so that they get to know and trust you.

8. Choose Marketing Methods That Excite You

Take some time to explore and develop marketing methods that suit your unique talents and interests. There are numerous ways to promote your practice. To get ideas, read books, take courses, ask other professionals how they built their practices, or hire a marketing consultant or coach. Marketing can be an enjoyable and creative process that provides a balance to the work you do with your clients. Find a way to take pleasure in this aspect of your business and you will be more motivated to do it.

9. Make a Commitment To Build Your Practice

Typically it can take anywhere from 1-3+ years to build a full practice. Exactly how long will depend on several factors including the size of your current network, how effectively you market, the demand for your area of expertise, and how much time you spend developing your practice. Make a commitment to take action steps on a regular basis. It's best if you set aside a specific amount of time on a weekly basis for marketing your practice, and try to stick to this schedule even when you become discouraged or become tempted to allow other things to take priority.

10. Get Support

Because you will be primarily working alone, you may feel isolated and discouraged at times. It's important to have people and resources you can access for support. Most successful people have consistently had other people helping them. Whether you get expert guidance from a professional business coach or consultant, or get help from your colleagues and friends, getting support, guidance and feedback on your ideas and goals is essential. The more support you get, the greater your chances of success with your private practice.

Many professionals who are having difficulty building their private practices tell me the reason they can't get clients is either because there is too much competition or because of tight economic times. While it may be true that competition for clients has increased and that financial resources are limited for many people, there will always be those professionals in your particular field who do have a full practice.

Competition is not going to go away and you have you don't have control over the economy. You need to find a way to develop and sustain a private practice in spite of these apparent obstacles. If you act on the above ten guidelines on a consistent basis, starting your private practice will be a lot easier and you should have a thriving practice within a few years. Be persistent, believe in yourself, learn from your mistakes, and most importantly, get out there and market your therapy or healing practice.

Placing A Value On Your Personal Injury Claim

Your Medical Doctor or Chiropractor has released you from treatment for your motor vehicle accident and enough time has passed so you're about to position yourself to sit down with Adjuster Henry Hard-Nose. His employer is Rock Solid Insurance, the company who insures Fred Fuddle, the individual who plowed into your rear end, smashing you with a tremendous crash which was responsible for your injuries plus the "Pain and Suffering" you've had to endure.

To be adequately compensated for what you've gone through you must have accumulated what's identified in the world of insurance claims as "Special Damages". Those are your Medical bills, your Lost Wages plus every dollar paid out to help with your recovery. When building the value of a personal injury claim there are several key elements you should be aware of:

LIABILITY: In the vast majority of motor vehicle accidents it's clear who was at fault. Assuming that Fuddle struck you a mighty blow in the rear end (rear-enders make up well over half of the motor vehicle accidents that take place in the United States each year) yours is a case that must be settled. (Final Statistics prove that in 83% of accident's that took place in 2003 it's clear who was at fault) !

The very doubtful liability case has little, if any, settlement value. If that's the situation you should obtain the services of the local Legal Beagle who does a good job at that, Attorney I.M. Greedy. But, if you do, be very careful when you sign Greedy's "Contingency Fee Agreement". Read it closely. Don't sign anything that will let him charge you one penny, other than his normal fee. Do not - - in any way whatsoever - - allow him to chisel any money from you, for his out-of-pocket expenses. All Greedy should be compensated for (if he's successful at busting loose some bucks from Rock Solid) is his fee and that should be no more than the usual locally published accepted percentage of the total recovery.

TYPE OF INJURY: If there are severe injuries (which make up only ten to fifteen percent of all motor vehicle accidents) you should obtain the services of a lawyer. But, if you've had minor injuries like whiplash, bumps, bruises, sprains and/or strains (and it's clear you're not at fault) you can handle and settle the claim yourself.

TYPE OF PERSON YOU ARE: Rate yourself and be brutally honest. You're most likely an average motor vehicle owner/driver, living a normal life. But, if you've spent some time behind bars, have a criminal record, or a history of character defects that often get your butt in a jam with the local cops (and this is well-known) you must take those facts into consideration when forming expectations regarding what your case is worth.

THE TYPE OF PERSON FRED FUDDLE IS: The better Fred Fuddle looks, or the better the "entity" "(Fuddle's business or company, etc.) appears, the better for Rock Solid. But, if Fuddle is a known bookie or drug dealer, they're in deep "stuff". On the other hand, if Fuddle is a well-loved philanthropist, that can be a plus for Rock Solid Insurance. Or if the vehicle that struck you was a van driven by Pastor Frederick Fuddle, and the named insured is The Fuddle Camp For Lost Souls, that can be a plus for Rock Solid.

But, if the "entity" that hit you was a dilapidated junk pile on wheels operated by Fred "Goof-Ball" Fuddle, and the named insured is The Fuddle Rotted Cow Manure Corporation, that will obviously not be favorable for Rock Solid.

DAMAGES: There are "Medical Special Damage" Expenses, "Non-Medical Special Damages" Expenses, and/or your "Property Damage" Expenses.

MEDICAL SPECIAL DAMAGE EXPENSES: These typically include Cost of Ambulance, Emergency Room, Hospital and/or Clinic Charges, Chiropractor, and/or Dentist, Over-The-Counter Drugs and/or Prescription Medications, Laboratory Fees and Services, Diagnostic Tests: X-Rays and (CT) Scan, Prosthetic Appliances or Surgical Apparatus, (Cranes & Crutches), Physical Therapy, Registered and/or Practical Nurse Fees, Ace Bandages, Gauze and Tape, Heating Pads, Creams, Lotions, Ointments, Balms and Salves.

When it comes to listing your Medical Special Damage "expenses" don't overlook one single dollar because, when it comes time to settle your claim, that dollar can increase the value of your payment for "Pain and Suffering" by a multiplier of four or even five! (Yes, that means a $20.00 bill can be worth $80.00 to $100.00 more ,in your pocket, from Rock Solid Insurance, at settlement time).

NON-MEDICAL SPECIAL DAMAGES: These typically include Lost Wages and Earnings, Lost Vacation time and/or Sick Leave, Travel Expenses (car rentals, public transportation, expenses incurred getting to and from your Chiropractor and/or hospital and/or physical therapy "treatment" of some sort) Household Help during disability and/or Child Care. Be sure to obtain written proof of such "Non Medical" Special Damages.

LOST WAGES: The income you lost, because you were unable to work, is an area where adjusters take terrible advantage of the typical claimant because they know so little about it.

Commissions and overtime can make a huge difference in your lost earnings. Be sure to get a letter from your employer, on their official letterhead, explaining that in detail. Or, if you're self-employed, get this information stated on your accountants letterhead.

The time you miss from work (thus the money you may have lost) is calculated and this element constitutes what is known as "Lost Wages" or "Lost Time Verification". In most situations you're entitled to compensation for lost time and earnings, even if you have no actual loss of money! Such as, for example, when your salary is paid by your company insurance coverage, or by taking sick leave, or some similar arrangement.

Even if you're salaried you should obtain a "Lost Earnings", or "Time Lost Verification", in writing on your employer's letterhead.

IF YOU'RE SELF-EMPLOYED: To prove your lost earnings you'll probably have to assemble some inside information for Hard-Nose. If you don't like the idea of submitting private documents to him, in the privacy of your home or office, just think how you'd feel about producing them in the non-private environment of a courtroom. When a case goes to trial, and if you want to prove your damages so as to collect adequate compensation, that's your only alternative.

TWO CRITICAL AREAS REGARDING LOST WAGES: Did the injury necessitate a change of job or employment at a lesser rate? Or, did the injury allow your going to work but only on a part-time basis? If the answer to either question is "Yes", it would be wise to ask your employer to document these facts on their letterhead.

IT'S CRUCIAL FOR YOU TO KNOW: Even if you've been paid while out of work, you can still compute your time lost from work as "Lost Wages" .

PROPERTY DAMAGE EXPENSES: These typically include Motor Vehicle Repair, Damaged Clothing, Broken Glasses, cost of Substitute Car Rentals, Towing and Storage. Make copies of all bills relating to any of your property damage expenses. Keep the originals. Be sure to have these in your possession when you and Hard-Nose plunk yourselves down to "Talk Turkey". Photocopies are sufficient to give him.

YOUR AGE: Because of their obvious innocence, insurance claim accident victims, up to the age of 12, generally have excellent settlement results. Those in their teens, and into their late 50's, fall into a fairly normal category because they're generally considered to be at the height of their physical stamina. Those in their late 60's, and over, usually fare extremely well; primarily due to the sympathy that's often invoked, from a judge or jury, because of general attitudes regarding frailty and the elderly.

MOST IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER:The information Hard-Nose places into your file plays a major role in the ultimate value of your claim. Never underestimate the importance of his impressions and conclusions! Should, one day, your case ends up in front of a judge, or jury, what Hard-Nose feels, observes and then reports into your file at Rock Solid about you, his insured Fred Fuddle, and/or possible witnesses, etc., (in addition to the information you've documented for him) could have massive influence on the value of your claim - - especially if Fuddle is a loser and he's absolutely in the wrong. At that point the only thing stalling a settlement is the amount of money it's going cost to get rid of you.

And, should your file end up in the hands of the local defense attorney for Rock Solid Insurance, all the positive factors about you, your injury and liability, will cause him to gasp, "Hey, what's going on here? My legal fees will be higher than the few hundred more bucks this one can be dumped for."

The bottom line: Your out-of-pocket expenses correctly recorded and presented, your injury information properly documented and your lost wages clearly established will seriously increase the dollar value of your personal injury claim.

The History of Shaklee Corporation - The Shaklee Income Opportunity

Shaklee Corporation has come a long way since 1915. Well, it wasn't even a corporation then...just a young doctor who wanted to help people the same way nature helped him. But the history of Shaklee Corporation starts even before then.

In the early 1900's, when Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee was just a young boy, the family doctor told his family he probably would not live to manhood due to his sickly nature.

But thankfully because of his mother's nutritional home remedies (feeding the inside of the body), and his father's encouragement for sportsmanship (energizing the outside), young Forrest grew up into a healthy, strong and vibrant man with a desire to live life to the fullest. From early childhood, young Forrest spent hours contemplating nature and the universe, taking into account all aspects of life and studied how vitality is necessary for energy which is found in the life force of nature and its food.

This led the young doctor into starting his own holistic health clinic where he continued to study all aspects of life. Dr. Shaklee always attributed everything to nature which he referred to as his "physician" and stated that "I have always listened to nature and she has never let me down."

And in Dr. Shaklee's professional career, he tended to listen to only nature. When he was experiencing abdominal pain and was told by medical doctors he needed his appendix out, the young doctor showed incredible insight to refuse surgery from the experts at that time and instead saw a chiropractor-an almost unheard of practice at the time. What it turned out to be was a dislocated lower vertebrate that was pressing against a nerve in his abdomen. When adjusted the pain went away and he became a chiropractor himself!

With over exposure to radiation from X-ray procedures, Dr. Shaklee developed a tumor and was again given and ultimatum by the medical doctors that he would have to amputate his arm, or he would not live to be 30. But what he discovered as a sickly child, and in his studies after developing his first food supplement "Vitalized Minerals" (before the word vitamin was even in the dictionary) he knew that nutrients from rich, fresh food were not only good for long-term vibrant health so that the body can function at its fullest capacity, but also for healing and recovering the body.

So he healed himself by going on a rigorous program of light exercise, spending time in the sun and in nature, following a strict diet and taking the supplements he was making, to help his body take the natural processes of fighting disease when it is sick. It took 3 years but he did recover, and thankfully no amputation was necessary.

It seemed that Dr. Shaklee wouldn't let anything stop him, not even when his clinic burned down around the Great Depression. But what he had learned, he retained in his brilliant mind.

He then moved his family and practice to Oakland CA and opened a clinic after the Depression and experienced unusual success for the times. He was in the company of some of the great thinkers including Thomas Edison and Henry Ford who taught him the importance of keeping your profession fun, no matter what it is.

After WWII, Dr. Shaklee wanted to share his supplements on a larger scale and founded Shaklee Products Company. He was then searching the entire country for the freshest food possible and used himself as his own Guinea pig to test his products.

When the Fabulous 50's hit, and the world was basking in its modernity with fast food, TV dinners, more automobiles and less exercise, the introduction of new chemicals in cleaners, personal care, food, medications and store-bought vitamins, Dr. Shaklee was focusing on the natural world, while nature wasn't relevant to modern living.

After the death of his first wife, Dr. Shaklee worked his clinic two more years before he retired. He then was faced with the dilemma of what to do about Shaklee Products. The good doctor wanted to be able to continue to educate people about the life forces of nature and good health and was afraid that they would become just another product and lost in the impersonal world of retail stores. So he devised a plan, where his friends and family members who did understand his products and philosophy could "share" Shaklee Products with others, teaching them the values and difference of the products, make it their own and profit from it.

Thus was born Shaklee Corporation in 1956...but it was only just beginning.

He was a nutritional doctor, a chiropractor, a philosopher, a preacher, a visionary, family man and entrepreneur, experiencing success after success due to his "Thoughtsmanship" mentality which teaches "what you think, you look, what you think, you do, what you think, you are" and by his constant pursuit of "Living in Harmony with Nature."

Dr. Shaklee believed and followed the golden rule which is to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." He has helped thousands of people all over the world become healthier, happier and more financially secure through his products and Shaklee income opportunity and has continued to do so, even after his death in 1985 at the ripe age of 91.

Here are several facts about Shaklee Corporation in general:

Shaklee is in the center of the 5 largest growing industries today: Health and Wellness, Anti-Aging, Home-Based Businesses, Nutritional Beauty, and the Green Revolution.

1915: Dr. Shaklee develops his first product "Vitalized Minerals."

1956: Dr. Shaklee establishes Shaklee Corporation. Today Shaklee has become the #1 natural nutrition company in the U.S., has 5 income streams, has sold over 500 million products, paid over $4 billion in bonuses, as is expected to become a Trillion Dollar company in the next couple of years.

1960: Dr. Shaklee creates one of the first biodegradable cleaners-before anyone knew what that meant or cared and when "green" was still just a color.

1961: Dr. Shaklee creates one of the first soy protein isolate formulas.

Since 1983 Shaklee has taken part in countless environmental projects with such people as Will Steger, Jacques Cousteau, and endurance programs with Sir Edmond Hillary, the Daedalus Project and Olympic athletes.

1992: Shaklee Cares, a non-profit organization is established to provide relief from natural disasters.

2000: Shaklee becomes the first company in the world to obtain Climate Neutral certification and totally offset its carbon emissions, resulting in a net-zero impact on the environment.

2004: Roger Barnett becomes Chairman and CEO. Barnett spent $20 Million in researching which company had the highest standards and the most potential and he found Shaklee. He is truly committed to the company's future and also committed to the standards Dr. Shaklee had for his mission and products.

2007: Shaklee completes the largest study of long-term supplement users in collaboration with researchers from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and determines that people who took Shaklee supplements had markedly better health than people who took either a different brand or no supplements at all. Shaklee users retained normal levels of Blood Pressure, HDL Cholesterol, Tryglycerides, C-reactive Protein and Homocysteine.

2008: Shaklee discovers a revolutionary breakthrough in cellular Anti-Aging.

Shaklee has received several awards over the years, including the Climate Protection Award from EPA, Global Green USA's Organizational Design Award, the Stevie for Best Corporate Environmental Responsibility Program by the American Business Awards, Clean Air Award from Breath California, Business Environmental Award for sustainability from Acterra: Action for a Healthy Planet, and the Green Power Leadership Award from the EPA.

While Shaklee stays true to the highly personal marketing that the good doctor trained people to be, the company stays up to date on the latest of technology for their marketing tools.

The company has a 50+ year track record, is worth well over $5 billion and is only in 6 countries. That gives Shaklee a serious advantage and so much potential for the future ahead.

Facts About Gallbladder Disease

Gallbladder disease is one of the leading causes of problems with digestion that result in hospital admissions. Did you know that around 10% of the population (on average) in most Western countries has gallstones? Most of these are "silent" but about 4% of patients with stones develop symptoms each year. For about half of them, the symptoms reoccur within 12 months. More men than women suffer from acute gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis), whereas more women than men experience gallstones (men have more kidney stones), and married women with children have more gallstones than unmarried women. The term "gallbladder disease" is in one sense a misnomer, for it is the liver, bile ducts and gallbladder that form the system that enables your body to digest fats and all are likely to participate in gallbladder problems.

I have always said that doctors generally see health problems as conditions with symptoms requiring drugs, whereas surgeons see health problems as conditions requiring the knife, and when a patient is admitted with abdominal discomfort surgeons are often keen to remove the gall bladder as it is believed that it 'serves very little purpose' and that the patient can "live comfortably without it". This is a ridiculous and very untrue notion however, and I want you to think twice about having your gallbladder removed, because over half of people I have seen who had their gallbladder removed still had the same digestive problem they started with in the first place unresolved, yet now without their gallbladder. Once it is out that is it, it does serve a purpose like every organ you were born with and having your gallbladder removed will affect your health to some degree. For some patients, the removal of their gallbladder had a major consequence on their health down the track. For others, it was a minor consequence.

A surgeon I once spoke to many years ago mentioned that the gallbladder operation was one frequently performed in larger hospitals by the younger surgeon to "bring them up to speed" in the operating room. He said that it was a relatively easy operation lasting from thirty to forty minutes enabling them to gain surgical experience before they move onto "bigger and better things" as far as abdominal surgery is concerned. I can't help wondering if all the gallbladder operations performed are really that necessary, because they are so quick to take it out these days. The apprentice mechanic will first be introduced to the engine by learning to replace the spark plugs before he is allowed to work deeper into the engine. If the plugs were removed, carefully cleaned and then replaced they generally last a long time. But then again, today more than half the stuff we buy is made in China and it is "chucked" as soon as it is even slightly defective!

What is the gallbladder's function?

Your gall bladder's main function is to collect and concentrate bile produced by the liver that the body uses to digest fats. Think of bile a bit like you would dishwashing liquid. Have you ever tried to wash dishes with fat or grease on them in water without dishwashing liquid? Not really effective is it? Not at least until you squirt a little dishwashing liquid into the warm water then they are clean in no time. Your gallbladder makes plenty of its own type of "degreasing liquid" called bile. Bile becomes up to twelve times more concentrated in the gallbladder (and hence much more effective) than it was in your liver. Think about this, with your gallbladder gone, your liver now has to produce, store and secrete bile. It can do this but not as effectively as it can without that little purse called the gallbladder hanging by its side.

The liver makes between 600 - 900 mls of bile each day, and what is not sent during meals to the duodenum (beginning of your small bowel) directly via the liver's main duct to emulsify fat, it is diverted through a smaller duct (branching off the main liver duct) to the gallbladder for storage until required. When fat in a meal reaches the duodenum (where most of the food you eat is digested and absorbed), hormones enter the circulation and along with nerve signals, stimulate the gallbladder to contract. This contraction, assisted by the small intestine's contractions, induces the gallbladder's small round muscle and the stored bile is propelled into the duodenum where it mixes with food from your stomach and pancreatic juices from the pancreas by way of the pancreatic duct. If you eat a fairly fatty meal (fish and chips for example) your gallbladder can empty completely within one hour. It is this combination of bile and fats that can make one feel "queasy" at times after a fatty meal.

Bile itself is made up of water, salts, fatty acids, lecithin, cholesterol, bilirubin, and mucus and has two main functions. The first function is to help in the absorption and digestion of fats, and the second to eliminate certain waste products from the body, especially excess cholesterol and the haemoglobin from worn out red blood cells, which have an average lifespan of 3 months.

In particular, the bile

(1) increases the solubility of fat-soluble vitamins, fats and cholesterol to assist in their absorption,
(2) stimulates secretion of water by the colon to help move its contents along,
(3) is a medium for excretion of bilirubin (the chief bile pigment) as a waste product of destroyed red blood cells, other waste products, medical drugs and their degradation products, and other toxins.

Bile salts are in fact re-absorbed into the small intestine, and re-secreted into the bile after extraction by the liver. All bile salts in the body re-circulate some 10 to 12 times a day by means of this so- called enterohepatic circulation. In each circulation small amounts of bile salts enter the colon where bacteria break them down for excretion with the feces.

Who is the greatest at risk of gallstones?

o Female gender: women outnumber men at least 2:1.
o Family history
o Forty or more years of age
o 3 children or more
o Diet: low calorie, low cholesterol, low fat. (especially a diet like this after a diet high in fat)
o Diet: previously high in refined carbs, alcohol, chocolate, chips, etc.
o Smoking
o High cholesterol history
o Constipation history
o Rapid weight loss
o Obesity
o Food allergy history
o Dehydration due to not enough water
o Liver problems like cirrhosis or past hepatitis infection
o Sensitive to penicillin antibiotics

Signs and symptoms of gallbladder problems

I have seen many women in the clinic who have for years on and off never felt quite well in terms of their digestion. Many have experienced a low grade ill feeling, a digestive discomfort which was put down to indigestion, constipation or diarrhoea or even a "grumbling appendix". They go on for years and years with digestive symptoms and never realise that they may be related to a gallbladder problem. That's because they are so inter-related with other digestive symptoms and too easy for their doctor to say: "You are fine; there is nothing to worry about". Constipation is one of the most commonly missed complaints, and so is farting. Don't be embarrassed here, we all fart, some men (and plenty of smallish children) enjoy boasting about it but women do it too and are generally totally embarrassed. Flatus is most common in bed when you first lie down, during the night or when you get up. This is because your bowel changes its position and gas more easily escapes through the anus with the large intestine in a horizontal rather than in a vertical position. Don't laugh, but do you sometimes feel fat, frumpy and farty and at times "sicky" after eating a fatty meal like fish and chips or chocolate? Does your partner joke about how much you "let off"? Then you may very well have a gallbladder issue.

The Four F's

Have you heard about the four f's? We learn when we study medicine that women who are "fat, fertile, forty and flatulent" are often the gallbladder girls. They are much more prone to having gallstones or a sluggish liver and gallbladder. The following list provided here may be related to gallbladder but please bear in mind that it could also be something else. The first four symptoms mentioned are the most indicative of gallbladder issues. It is not necessary to have all or many symptoms to have gallbladder problems but the more you have from this list, the more confirmation you have that your gallbladder is involved. Please note that it is still advisable to consult your GP for an accurate diagnosis.

Signs and symptoms of impending gallbladder problems (If you answered yes to the first four (with an asterisk) go to your health-care professional for a more accurate diagnosis.)

  • Pain or tenderness under the rib cage on the right side, could be central too*

  • Bloating

  • Farting

  • Burping or belching up gas easily after meals

  • Feeling of fullness or food not digesting

  • Diarrhea (or alternating from soft to firm)

  • Constipation (or simply skipping a day here or there)

  • Headache over eyes, especially right

  • Bitter fluid comes up after eating, could be a slight reflux and very subtle

  • Frequent use of laxatives

Being big is actually in itself a big risk factor in gallbladder problems, and women with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater are more than double at risk than women who have a BMI of 25 or less. Although a decrease in weight reduces the risk of gallstone formation, there is a 15 to 25 percent increase in gallstone formation during or immediately following weight loss! I have seen this with several patients over the years; they have lost weight and are proud of if only to experience digestive problems and then a bad bout of pain within twelve to eighteen months after the weight loss. A major heart study in America discovered that women with Type 2 Diabetes were almost twice as likely (41.8 percent versus 23.1 percent) that non diabetics to have gallstones, and the risk was highest amongst the 30 to 59yr old group.

I always ask a person these standard questions when they come in with a (suspected) gallbladder dysfunction - "Did you loose weight recently, say in the past two years?" "Have you been on a fat free diet lately?" "What kind of foods/drinks do you like to habitually have?" By asking the right questions, you would be surprised how many will actually tell you what is wrong with them, and their answers can point right to the heart of the problem. In my observation, the main factors leading to gallbladder attacks and dysfunction are obesity (and rapid weight loss (for example1 pound a week); "fat-free" diets are especially bad.

Poor dietary habits - especially too many fatty and fried foods, alcohol, too much dairy food like cheeses and full cream milk, refined sugars and starches, high protein foods (in excess), food allergies, parasites, long-term use of birth control pills, and a sedentary (couch potato) lifestyle. The Atkins diet craze caused a lot of gallbladder problems, for example. Once these factors are operating, bile produced in the liver and flowing through the biliary ducts into the gallbladder becomes too thick, the bile ducts may then become obstructed, gravel and stones may form (90% of all gallstones are cholesterol), and the whole biliary system may become clogged. Other causative factors include insufficient water consumption, a weak immune system (increases likelihood of infection in the gallbladder), as well as diabetes and various liver diseases.

Prevention of gallbladder problems lies in controlling obesity, diet and adequate intake of consuming water, and the use of appropriate physical exercise. Louise Hay, an interesting lady who wrote the famous book "Heal Your Life" way back in 1976 with regard to how emotions can trigger physical problems, mentions that anger, aggressiveness, and bitterness can result in gallbladder problems. Keeping the immune system strong and the liver and small intestine healthy is very important too. Let's look now at some non-medical alternatives once gallbladder problems are evident, and also how to prevent this problem in the first instance.

Food allergies

Often finding and eliminating food allergies can stop frequent attacks of gallbladder pain and prevent unnecessary surgical removal. In one study, avoidance of allergens relieved symptoms in 100% of 69 patients with symptomatic gallstones or post-cholecystectomy (after the operation) syndrome (uncontrolled trial commented on by Dr. Alan Gaby, USA). I'm not convinced just testing for antibodies in terms of food allergies is the way to go, try also: muscle testing, you may know somebody who does do electro-dermal testing. Either way, try going on an elimination or allergy diet, it may be the answer to your problems.

For recurring gallbladder pain - suspect food allergies in just about 100% of patients. On average I find that they are reactive to 4 or 5 foods, and according to Dr. Jonathon Wright, one of America's most experienced natural medicine doctors, egg is generally always one of the prime food allergens involved. There are over 800,000 cholecystectomies (gallbladder operations) performed in USA per annum, they cost $5,000 US to perform. If you do the math here, effective preventative natural medicine treatment could spare 4 billion US dollars with gallbladder conditions alone. I can imagine how many of the operations are performed needlessly in NZ each year, and it is truely amazing how many people I have seen who have their gallbladder out only to find that it did not fix up the problem they originally went to the doctor for in the first place.

Other medical methods of handling gallstones in the gallbladder include attempts to fragment them with sonic shock waves (lithotripsy). Of course there are other times when surgery may become necessary, such as in perforation of the gallbladder (often from gangrene) or where for example non-benign tumours and cancers are present. All this is what I call "crisis medicine," so common in the orthodox medical procedures used in the hospital system. Does it not make sense to prevent a gallbladder condition in the first place rather than waiting for disaster to strike and then to take action?

How is your back?

See your Chiropractor; you may have mid-thoracic vertebral subluxations. If you have back issues, your fourth thoracic vertebrae may a bit "dodgey", you could be looking at a subluxations which means a slight dislocation (misalignment) or biomechanical malfunctioning of the vertebrae (the bones of the spine). These disturbances may irritate nerve roots and the blood vessels which branch off from the spinal cord between each of the vertebrae, and if this is what is happening around the middle of your back it could be affecting your gallbladder.

Gallbladder removed? - take bile salts

I always recommend that a patient who has had their gallbladder removed take bile salts (digestive enzymes) because fats & oils are not properly digested and absorbed by these folk. I always give bile salts when I give them fish-oil, or Vitamin A. Digestive enzymes are essential for those who have had their gallbladder removed, they will feel a lot better for taking them regularly. Their digestion will improve, their bowels will work better and they will feel less full and bloated. For patients who do not improve their diet following surgical removal of the gallbladder the removal leaves the person with an increased risk of colon cancer. Although fast relief of some symptoms can follow this surgery, the relief is often short-lived and the basic causes are still present. If you have lost your gallbladder, the regular use of bile salts at the start of meals can help substantially, including better processing of the fat-soluble essential nutrients such as essential fatty acids and vitamins A, D, E, and K. Probably the best way to tell if you are using enough bile salts is to monitor the colour of the stool. If the colour is lighter than the normal brown colour, or is even a light beige or yellow, this implies insufficient bile flow; with it's under absorption of essential nutrients, and a need for more bile salts. Such a need for more bile salts will be greater after a meal with greater amounts of fats and oils. Talk to your Naturopath more here, he or she can recommend a product which should work well. I generally find that the digestive enzymes prescribed by your Naturopath to be stronger and much more effective than the retail (health-food shop) products. That is why they are classified as "practitioner-only" products. My website (see resource box) explains more about "practitioner-only" products.

Useful herbal supplements with liver & gallbladder complaints: Swedish bitters, milk thistle, chamomile, peppermint, greater celandine, gymnema, gravel root, dandelion leaf & root, chicory, rhubarb, burdock, cramp bark, ginger root, fennel, and turmeric.

Homeopathic medicine: one of the most specific homeopathic medicines is Chelidonium 30C, and I recommend this remedy for patients who complain of right-sided pains radiating through the back, pains radiating to the right shoulder blade region. It is mainly thought of as a liver remedy, but I find it fantastic for gallbladder disorders as well.

Diet

Eliminate refined sugar and other refined carbohydrates, because it is these foods which in particular increases the cholesterol saturation of bile. Gallbladder problems don't generally happen in under developed countries, they are a phenomenon of the Western developed world. We call these sorts of health problems the "diseases of modern civilisation". You will find that our Western diet is the highly refined one, most people eat foods from the supermarket and our diets are the ones high in the refined sugars, starches and flours. Foods and drinks to strictly avoid One of the worst beverages to drink with gallbladder issues is coffee whether decaffeinated or not, it aggravates symptoms by causing the gallbladder to contract along with sugar. So, sugar and coffee is not a good idea! I also tell patients to avoid chocolate, deep fried foods and saturated animal fats in general. Most tell me that they cannot tolerate these foods anyway, so listen to your body and avoid what makes you feel unwell or sick.

Gallbladder foods which have a particular favourable effect include beetroot, Brussels sprouts, fennel, sauerkraut, parsley, artichokes, pears, granny smith apples and the bitter foods such as rocket, endive, chicory, and capers.

Consume a little olive oil daily One way to prevent build-up of gallstones is to eat some oil, particularly extra virgin olive oil, daily; this encourages the gallbladder to contract and to daily "sand dump" its contents into the small intestine, preventing sludge from accumulating and forming gallstones.

Treatments

Warm castor oil packs. All you need is 200ml castor oil (try the chemist or supermarket), and old saucepan, an old cloth, and an old towel. Just warm the old cloth in the pot of oil until it is quite warm, squeeze it out and apply it over the region of the gallbladder - central a little to the right just near where your ribcage finishes. Cover with the old towel, place a hot water bottle on top for added warmth and lie down for fifteen to twenty minutes, then rub the area for 2 minutes with an ice cube in a cloth-repeat 3 times once daily for a week can sometimes dislodge gallstones, and is especially a powerful treatment if used in conjunction with the flush and dietary approach. Careful with castor oil, it can stain.

Liver and gallbladder flush

there are many different gallbladder and liver flushes that will work if you have had recurrent gallbladder problems and your diet has been typically Kiwi. You really need to work in with your health-care professional like your naturopath here. I have guided many patients through this procedure the past twenty years and have never experienced a problem, and to be honest have very rarely found somebody with a "gallstone too big to pass" as some may fear.

For a gallbladder "attack" try these recipes Here are a couple of tips to try with acute pain, if the pain doesn't subside, seek medical opinion.

o Drink 1 tbsp of apple cider in a glass of apple juice (warmed). This should relieve the pain quickly.
o In a small glass add 翹 tsp turmeric, 翹 tsp cumin, and 翻 tsp Manuka honey - top with boiling water, stir to dissolve and mix together, drink when warm. Take: 3 times a day.
o Citrus tea: have 3 glasses daily of tea made by boiling for 20 minutes in water the rind of a grapefruit.

Recommendations stopping future gallbladder attacks

1. Each morning, drink a "gallbladder attack flush"; 300mls Apple juice (or dilute with water), 3 cloves of raw finely chopped garlic, 1-2 inches of raw finely chopped ginger root, mix well in blender. This drink helps soften sludge and helps prepare your gallbladder to dump rubbish.

2. Liver & gallbladder flush. One simple flush is to drink 3 Tbs of extra-virgin olive oil with the juice of a lemon before retiring and on awakening for at least 3 days, or until no more stones pass. I have other flushes but tend to use them in a consultation with the patient only. This is one procedure in my opinion you are best not to do yourself at home without any guidance, but get the advice from a qualified Naturopath, preferably one with experience in this area.

3. Eat a well balanced diet of 50% raw or partially steamed foods and fresh juices, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts/seeds. This low saturated fat, high fiber diet is a must for healing gallbladder disorders. Flaxseed and olive oil are great additions to your diet for repair and prevention of gallstones. Bitter foods (see below) are a great addition, and will help prevent a build up in future. The two top foods to consume? - Lemon juice and olive oil.

4. Increased your intake of Vitamin C can help with gallbladder ailments. Replenish your vitamin C stores by eating plenty of vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Good sources include capsicums (red/green/yellow), berries, lemons, and broccoli/green leafy veg. I recommend a high grade Vitamin C powder daily for the prevention and maintenance of many conditions in the body.

5. Herbal detoxification products may be helpful in stopping and reversing a gallbladder attack. I suggest using formulas that use organic, whole herbs. There are some excellent products available, just ask your herbalist or naturopath.

3 tips for after the gallstones have passed

o Dr. Dick Versendaal, a Chiropractor from America recommends his "carotid-umbilicus technique". For the best results, it is to used every 15 minutes for 1-3 hours as follows (it's easier if someone else does it on you than you try to do it yourself ): using the index finger, apply a steady pressure into the belly button for 5 minutes, such as to depress the belly button 1-1 ç¿» inches (but avoiding pain). Do this once a day for up to 12 weeks after the stones are passed, it will help your gallbladder a lot.

o Firm rubbing for at least 30 seconds1-2 times a day of the neuro-lymphatic reflexes (these points may feel quite tender if you have gallbladder issues) between ribs 3 and 4, and ribs 4 and 5, just to each side of the breastbone, and between ribs 5 and 6 just under the nipple of the right breast can be quite helpful.

o Also softly holding (not pressing or rubbing) for at least one minute the neurovascular reflexes at the anterior fontanel (front of head the baby's soft spot near crown of head- locate at tip of middle finger when the wrist crease of either hand is placed on the eye brows and the middle finger extended onto the midline of the skull) and at the hairline on the forehead directly above the outer corner of each eye. Look for the "tender spots", you will find them.

Chiropractic and Cranial Adjusting

Headaches and other ailments can sometimes only be helped by Chiropractic and Cranial Adjusting. When all else fails, I always check the position of the cranial plates. The skull is a dynamic amazing structure that is not fused into a piece of armor just to protect the brain. THe plates of the skull shift ever so slightly and can also become stuck into the incorrect position. My office manger was complaining of severs headaches and terrible stomach pain that no one could find the cause for. She went to her medical doctor several times, and I had even adjusted away her subluxations numerous times without effect on her condition. One day I checked her skull to find that things were out of place. I adjusted them and her problems vanished immediately. WOW.

Neck Pain

Approximately 19% of our patients come to us with complaints of neck pain or discomfort. This pain can be caused by a variety of factors, such as an accident, injury, overuse, etc. The most common neck condition we address is whiplash.

The efficacy of chiropractic for neck pain has been well documented in numerous studies conducted in the United States, Canada, Wales, and the Netherlands. In a joint U.S./Canadian study published in 1996, researchers from UCLA, the West LA Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and two chiropractic colleges found that for some patients with sub-acute or chronic neck pain, spinal adjustment proved to be a more effective treatment than mobilization or physical therapy.

In a study conducted by the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto in 1997, researchers found spinal adjustments to improve neck mobility and decrease neck pain. An additional Canadian investigation published in 1997 by the University of Calgary found spinal adjustments to improve neck mobility and decrease neck pain in patients having back and/or neck complaints.

General practitioners in private practice at the Welsh National School of Medicine conducted a study of the efficacy of spinal adjustment in alleviating neck and shoulder pain. The results, published in 1983, indicated that pain and discomfort improved significantly after adjustment, as well as range of motion and flexibility of the affected areas.

A 1992 Netherlands study conducted by doctors of medicine and other professionals investigated different methods of treatment for patients with chronic back and neck pain. After 12 weeks of care, manual therapy (which consisted of adjustment and mobilization of the spine) had showed a "faster and larger improvement in physical functioning" relative to the other types of treatment such as massage, exercises, and physical therapy.

Head Pain

Headaches, both tension and migraine, are the chief complaint for approximately 13% of our patients. Before you reach for your pain-reliever of choice the next time a headache or migraine sneaks up on you, consider the following information on the efficacy of chiropractic care for head pain.

In a 1995 study conducted in Minnesota, the effectiveness of spinal adjustment relative to the administration of an antidepressant drug (amitriptyline) for patients with chronic tension-type headaches was investigated. The researchers included doctors of chiropractic, a doctor of medicine, and another professionals from Northwestern College of Chiropractic and the Pain Assessment and Rehabilitation Center, Ltd. They determined that, after four weeks of treatment, patients receiving spinal adjustment therapy experienced a continued lack of symptoms, whereas patients taking the medication returned to original, baseline conditions.

Cranial adjusting has been around for a while, so my technique is just a new slant on an old method - it does work!

The Five Most Common Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain is common, and almost everyone experiences it at least once in their lifetime. This pain can be mild to severe and intermittent to chronic. The intensity and duration may depend on the initial cause(s) of the pain and/or how much treatment is received and how quickly.

Understanding how neck problems can develop is a good starting point for preventing it in the first place. These are the five most common causes of neck pain:

1) Soft tissue injury/trauma: "Soft tissue injury" refers to damage to the muscles, tendons and ligaments. The neck is laden with vulnerable soft tissue. This tissue is easily injured when the head is jarred suddenly, such as in a car crash (whiplash). It can also occur when playing sports, falling down stairs or other kinds of accidents.

Soft tissue damage due to injury can be difficult to prevent, since it's unpredictable and can happen almost anytime, anywhere. You can decrease your risk of this type of injury by maintaining good posture, wearing proper protective gear when playing sports, and always being aware of your surroundings. Regular exercise, particularly exercise that strengthens your core muscles and upper body, can also help prevent neck soft tissue injury.

2) Degenerative disc disease: The name may be a bit misleading, since disc degeneration is a normal part of the aging process. With this condition, the discs in the spine may become inflamed and lead to neck pain.

In most cases the condition does not cause chronic pain. Flare-ups can be treated with ibuprofen or natural care, such as chiropractic or acupuncture. Cases which are more severe or lead to chronic pain are sometimes treated surgically.

3) Herniated disc: A disc in this condition pushes out of its normal covering. The disc may even rupture. Herniated or ruptured discs can be mildly to severely painful. Treatment usually involves activity modification, exercises and ibuprofen for pain. More serious cases that don't respond to mild treatments may require steroid treatment or surgery.

4) Pinched nerves (Radiculopathy): The spinal cord is comprised of a number of nerves. These nerves can become compressed due to injury or other spine conditions (like disc degeneration). It can also occur simply from poor posture while walking, standing, sitting or sleeping.

Manipulation by a chiropractor can be effective at loosening tight areas. Other treatments like acupuncture and laser therapy may also be beneficial. Pain can be treated with ibuprofen when needed.

5) Bone injuries: A broken collarbone or spinal fracture can cause pain in the neck. Broken bones can occur even with seemingly innocuous injuries and need immediate treatment. If you experience neck pain after some type of injury or fall, even a small one, seek medical attention.

Meningitis, or inflammation of the meninges, can cause pain in the neck. Meningitis is uncommon, but is a serious condition that can lead to death if not treated quickly. If you have trouble bending your neck forward or twisting it sideways as normal, you should seek medical attention. You should be especially wary if you experience neck pain with flu-like symptoms, such as headache or fever, or if you've been exposed to someone with meningitis.

The treatment depends on the type of pain you are experiencing. You may find neck pain relief at home by applying heat (a warm compress) or cold (an ice pack).

You can also find some relief by taking ibuprofen. However, this is not a treatment, but simply a method for temporarily reducing pain. Visit a medical professional who can determine and treat the source of the problem.

Your Headache May Be Caused By Neck Problems

A picture that greets me all too often in my work is that of a person who finally decided to seek physical therapy treatment for his headache. Either the cause of the headache was misdiagnosed and consequently treated incorrectly or he thought it would eventually go away by itself after applying some self-help remedies. At this point, a stage has been reached where the headache started to interfere with normal level of function and the intensity of the pain is unbearable.

Headaches have become one of the most common medical complaints of our modern society with its hectic pace and enormous pressures. The demands of an overly busy lifestyle may result in fatigue of neck muscles, which place them at a higher risk of being strained. Since the cause of headaches resulting from neck problems is more challenging to diagnose, and X-rays for example, may not reveal anything abnormal, sufferers are often left frustrated.

Headaches that originate in the neck (commonly called cervicogenic headaches) can be tricky to diagnose since the symptoms may be similar to that of migraine headaches. Some of the common symptoms include:

  • More prevalent in females

  • Usually on the one side of the head

  • The pain is severe and throbbing

  • Nausea

  • Phonophobia (severe sensitivity to sound)

  • Photophobia (severe sensitivity to light)

Even though these symptoms are more common to migraines, they have been reported by patients suffering from cervicogenic headaches as well. Major distinguishing factors between migraines and cervicogenic headaches are that cervicogenic headaches are affected by the position and movement of the head or neck and there will be tenderness to touch along the base of the skull.

What are Cervicogenic Headaches?

In cervicogenic headaches the pain originates in the cervical spine, neck and upper shoulder area. These headaches have regular pain patterns which are related to muscular trigger points in the neck, shoulder and upper spine area. The pain is often behind the eye, in the forehead, along the jaw line, on top of the head and behind the ear.

Why do neck problems result in headaches?

The joints that connect the top levels of the spine to the base of the skull account for more than 50% of the motion of the entire head and neck region and is thereby placed under continual stress as they bear the load of the head. I've often heard patients complain that their head feels almost to heavy for the neck to bear. Other structures in the neck area such as the discs, muscles and ligaments along with the joints have nerve endings which are sensitive to any form of strain or injury. When irritated long enough or severe enough the nerves fire off a response and the result is a headache.

Causes of Cervicogenic Headaches

  • History of whiplash or other neck injuries

  • Muscle strain

  • Maintaining a poor posture over a prolonged period of time

  • Stress and Tension

  • Intervertebral disc disease

  • Progressive joint degeneration

  • Previous neck surgery

  • Fatigue which affects the endurance of the muscles

What you can do about your headaches:

  1. Especially if you have a history of chronic cervicogenic headaches and previous injuries to your neck area, it is advisable to have regular sessions of therapy. The therapies known to ease these headaches are physical therapy and chiropractic treatment. Both these therapies will employ different techniques that has been proven to bring considerable relief. Regular pain management is especially effective and results in a significant decrease in both the frequency of the headache episodes, as well as the intensity of the pain during an episode.

  2. Posture correction. This is a very important consideration for long-term control of headaches. Your neck muscles work quite hard to balance your head on top of your spine. A poor posture allows some muscles to become "lazy" while others are overloaded, causing an imbalance in how they work together. It is however not possible to maintain a perfect posture all of the time and therefore the next point is also important.

  3. Increasing the strength and endurance of the neck muscle groups, while addressing muscular imbalance through exercises is well worth the investment in time. Most exercises are simple and can be done standing in the shower, in your car while waiting for the traffic light to change, behind your desk, etc.

  4. Make sure you are sleeping on a pillow that adequately support the normal arch of your neck as you spend considerable time sleeping and correct positioning is therefore important.

  5. Analgesia like Paracetamol or Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory medication can also be helpful

Please Note: Consulting your medical professional with regards to treatment and exercise programs is always the safest route to go. Each individual responds differently to different treatment regimes and therefore should seek individual consultation.

A Great Time to Visit the Chiropractor

There are many of us that must handle minor aches and pains caused by exercises or sometimes the line of work that we are in. We are able to misinterpret these signs as our muscles adjusting to the heavy grind or something that can disappear in a few days. But for numerous of us the symptoms become tougher and we notice that instead of going away they become recurring for weeks or also months.

One of the toughest things that you can do is nothing at all. Thinking that you are able to work through the pain or that simple over the counter products will serve to numb it or maybe alleviate it might not be adequate. When this happens it might be time to see the chiropractor. It is their occupation to cure aches and pains that can wear us down.

It might be challenging for people to understand when it is time to visit the chiropractor. People who go in time and when they should are able to spare themselves months of pain. To know when you must go you have to be made mindful of the symptoms and troubles. The most standard include:

Neck or back pain
Headaches that take place often and can be induced by stress in the neck
Pain that appears to move over different areas of the body
Incapable to move back or neck without dealing with serious pain or muscle spasms
Trouble sleeping induced by headaches, back, and neck pain

Unlike what some individuals think about these different pains are not natural or dependable to have to deal with. In order to mend these pains you must visit a chiropractor so that they can knead the stress in the muscles and assuage it without medicine.

When Does a Back Injury Become a Long Term Disability?

Have you ever pulled your back at work? A surprising amount of workers suffer from back injuries, but what makes one back injury a short-term affair, while others can turn into a chronic, long-term disability? This was the question burning in the mind of researcher Judith A. Turner, Ph.D., of the University of Washington, Seattle. She and her colleagues set out to find the answer to this question by determining the risk factors in long-term disability after a back injury.

The research involved more than 1,800 workers that received workers' compensation. These workers had filed a claim 3 weeks after a job related back injury, on average, and were analyzed at one year after their injury. To determine the risk factors the researchers looked at many different variables including job characteristics, employer response, psychological factors, and health care providers.

The goal of this study was not only to find out risk factors, but to be able to use these risk factors to help target those at risk and work on prevention for long-term disability due to a back injury. After studying the risk factors that were found, the researchers developed a statistical model that was estimated at an 88 percent accuracy rate, for identifying the workers who are at the highest risk for long-term disabling and those who would and would not be disabled one year after a back injury.

What were the risk factors? While there were many different risk factors, the ones that stood out were:

Severe initial back injury (of course);

Pain that spread down the leg (signifying radiculopathy, or spinal nerve roots concern);

Previous injuries resulting in time off work (one month or higher);

First doctor seen (whether they were a specialist or not);

Whether or not a chiropractor was seen (those who saw a chiropractor were less likely to be disabled);

Whether or not employers provided accommodations (such as lighter workload or an easier, less stressful or less physical job)

and Whether or not the job was stressful or hectic;

Surprisingly, psychological factors that were studied were not significant risk factors.

Whether or not the initial back injury was severe was definitely a factor, but researchers found that the other risk factors seemed to be independent upon the severity of the initial injury.

Researchers are hoping the new statistical model based on these risk factors help in future prevention of back injuries turning into chronic, long term disability.

Chiropractic Coursework and Career Opportunities

Chiropractic care is complicated and requires future practitioners to hold a degree in this exciting field. Students interested in entering a career in the chiropractic care industry are able to study through a number of educational programs. Accredited schools and colleges offer undergraduate preparation that leads to a graduate degree, which is required to enter a career as a chiropractor.

Undergraduate training is required to be eligible for the doctor of chiropractic degree program, which is required for students to become practitioners. Many schools provide bachelors degree programs that give students the needed foundational knowledge in organic chemistry, biology, psychology, sociology, English, and more. Most students that work towards the 90-credit undergraduate degree requirement go on to fulfill the needs of a bachelor's degree program. Some possible coursework that students can complete includes:

  • Chiropractic Care

In a course like this student's study the entire field of chiropractic care. Students work through several subjects that pertain to the history, philosophy, and practice of the industry. The principles of spinal care are examined in regards to different functions such as primary, rehabilitative, and acute care. Communication and ethics are other common topics discussed in a beginner's course.

  • Spinal Function

Education will break down the entire function of spine into parts that include the occipital and thoracic areas of the spine. This allows students to fully understand what takes place inside the body so they understand how healing occurs. The function of muscles, bones, nerves, and tissues are all explored to establish a base for further learning. Students that complete this course at a traditional college will also perform a cadaver dissection.

The field of chiropractic care has two main career possibilities. Students can complete education to become chiropractic assistants or chiropractors. To become a chiropractic assistant students are required to complete an associate's degree program. Schooling in this area may allow students to work through a mixed training program. This type of program allows students to complete introductory courses like medical ethics and office skills online. Hands-on courses like x-ray procedures and radiology are taken at a traditional college campus. This career opportunity develops the skills needed to assist a chiropractor such as conducting x-ray exams and screening practices.

Students that continue education and enter a doctor of chiropractic degree program will learn how to adjust the spine and rehabilitate patients. Chiropractors diagnose and treat patients that have misaligned spines. Education at this level requires a minimum of 4,200 hours of coursework, lab, and clinical practice to be eligible for graduation. Due to the extensive hands-on approach of learning students will have to attend a traditional college to receive education. Some courses may be studied to allow students to learn natural healing, public health, and physiology.

Students are able to receive an accredited education in all areas of chiropractic care. The Council on Chiropractic Education ( http://www.cce-usa.org/ ) approves schools and colleges that offer the quality training necessary for success. Students should research accredited chiropractic schools that have coursework available to prepare for a fulfilling career inside the professional workplace.

Misaligned Ribs - How It Causes Upper Back Pain

Misaligned rib can occur due to something as a mundane as an acute coughing fit. Surely you didn't know that already? Are you among those unfortunate people who have consulted numerous doctors to demystify the cause for a misaligned rib and rid you of the upper back pain, without any success so far? The factors causing back pain, whether in the upper back or the lower, can be quite a mystery for the suffering patients as well as the doctors treating them. Back pain can be harmful to other parts of the body as well and conversely, back pain can also be due to problems in other body parts, e.g. the heart or the neck.

If your doctor or the chiropractor you have consulted detects the cause of the upper back pain as a misaligned rib, don't be surprised. A misaligned rib linked to upper back pain is fairly common. Is it treatable? Absolutely. The misaligned rib needs to and can be treated; it is not a malady that will heal by itself.

More about the vertebrae and ribs

Pain in the upper back that has been identified as being due to a misaligned rib can make it quite painful to even breathe or walk. Not just this, a simple activity like twisting or turning the upper body can be painful in the extreme. This is because the upper back, also called the Thoracic, has twelve vertebrae that have two ribs attached to each of them, i.e. twelve ribs each on both right and left sides. The two lowest ribs in the ribcage are known in medical terms as Floating Ribs, because unlike the other ribs that are attached to the sternum or sternum cartilage, the Floating ribs are attached just to the vertebrae. Just as adjoining connecting vertebrae can get misaligned, so can the ribs and thoracic vertebrae, leading to upper back pain.

Getting the cure
As a patient having back pain, do not attempt to self-treat the misaligned rib or douse the back pain with painkillers, in the futile belief that you will not need to visit the doctor. Prescription painkillers will only alleviate the back pain; the root cause of your upper back pain, namely, the misaligned will still be there. Only a doctor will be able to administer the correct treatment or refer you to a chiropractor for correctly aligning the ribs. While there is a chance that a misaligned rib that has been treated may occur again in the future, the probability is not very high. Upper back pain or even back pain can occur due to a number of reasons, including stress, so stop worrying about it.

It All Starts With the Feet - Barefoot Shoes For Greater Mobility, Stability and Less Pain

Well, a few of my patients, especially the athletes in my practice have asked quite a few questions about barefoot running or barefoot shoes. In general, barefoot technology is just not as prolific as the non-barefoot shoes. What is a barefoot shoe? I know, the term is contradictory. Many health care providers, chiropractors, physical therapists etc. try to help encourage your body to be as pain-free and efficient as possible. In my office, I often see feet that are dysfunctional causing low back pain, back pain in general, knee and hip pain and even headaches! How is this possible? Well, forces are transmitted through our body through various structures. If those forces are transmitted properly, we can handle them, if not, tissues break down and we may notice symptoms anywhere along the road.

When we are barefoot, and our foot structure has not been malformed by more modern, stylish shoes, every time we take a step, the long bones leading to our toes spread apart, the big toe is aloud to extend freely; this tightens-up your plantar fascia and various ligaments related to your long arch creating a spring mechanism. In addition, your heel is at the same level as the rest of your foot which allows your various arches to do what their supposed to do (support and transfer motion). This means a feet that are allowed to work the way they are supposed to will support you, stabilize you and help to properly transmit forces through your body. This results in less pain and more efficient running and walking, jumping etc.

For there to be functional movement in the body, there must be a balance between mobility and stability (stability = the right muscles are contracting at the right time and motion is controlled). Without proper foot mobility and stability, you are setting yourself up for ankle, knee, hip, low back and neck problems and pain. The foot is THE FIRST structure to begin transmitting force through your body when you are walking, running, jumping or even just standing there, in awe at what you are reading.

An efficient and stable foot structure is paramount to functional movement and can shave time off your runs and miles off your body. Where does it start? With arches; "arch Support" is a silly term; think about it, how much sense would it make to put giant pillars underneath the arches of bridges? It wouldn't, the arched bridged is designed to distribute force through the arch so that it only needs to be supported on either end of the bridge. Why would we insist on supporting our arches when they can support themselves?

Now I know some of you are reading this saying to yourself, "I have flat feet, I NEED arch support because I don't have great arches."

OK, sometimes, you can't just start wearing barefoot shoes, you need to "wean" yourself into them by using more flexible shoes, using a metatarsal pad and doing specific arch-building exercise like the "short foot exercise". But trust me, when you start wearing barefoot shoes, your feet will become stronger and more mobile than ever. For instance I have never had much dexterity with my toes but after wearing barefoot shoes for 3 months I can move my toes around like never before. In addition, my feet and calves are much stronger.

Imagine what a disaster it would be if we were to jack up one side of a bridge; that's what you are doing every time you wear shoes that put your heel higher than your toes. I am not just talking about high heels! Go grab your running shoes, workout shoes, casual shoes, chances are, most of them do this and it is killing our feet.

Lastly, like I wrote earlier, the long bones of our feet need to spread apart with every step you take. Here is a test for your shoes; pull out the inserts, put them on the floor, place your foot over them like they would be if the inserts and your foot were in a shoe, put your weight on your foot. Does your foot "spill out" over the sides of your shoe insert? If so (and most of you will find that this is the case), your shoes are not letting the long bones of your foot spread apart with every step creating a higher risk of foot pain, neuromas, plantar fascitis and more.

Choosing footwear that allows your feet to support the rest of your body is incredibly important. If you walk or run on a regular basis, it is absolutely necessary and, according to some experts (including me), one of the reasons foot, ankle, knee, hip and low back pain is so prevalent in societies that wear shoes designed to literally squeeze the life out of our feet.

Backpack for College Students

For the college student the backpack is a must have. Not only is it required to be the "be it all" carryall, but it must also meet present-day rules for being fashion forward and the proud exhibitor school logos. Backpacks for college students are made in breakaway trendy styles and are often fabricated in indestructible nylon or the more pricey haute contour fabrics. Yet being fashion forward is only part of the story of why college students have made the backpack a tradition on campuses. Learning disciplines have changed to include larger more specialized materials needing to be transported from one place to another. Whether framed or without the backpack has become indispensible.

Roomy with compartmentalized interiors, the backpack has become widely accepted because of its extreme function as well. Often having additional external storage in the form of bungee strings and nylon webbing, this design functions ideally as a tucking away place for easy access to those must haves (like water bottles). The larger textbooks required for study and the need to make fewer trips between classes also makes backpacks essential to the college student. Yet at the same time the weight of heavier books and technical equipment has created the need for a well balance backpack. The framed backpack has become the smarter choice. For both the campus and field student alike the framed backpack has become highly specialized.

Though both the framed and the no-framed styles of backpacks comes in a variety of color styling and fabrications, the decision as to which to purchase for the college student is crucial. The framed backpack, due to its construction, offers a wiser choice. The support insures an even distribution of weight along the curvature of the lower back. This allows easier movement thus eliminating future trips to the chiropractor.

Even the trendy and more expensive designer backpack makers have blurred the line in looks when kowtowing to this valuable market. Like plastic buckets, Ziploc bags, first aid kits, jump-start batteries, sunscreen and towels, the backpack for college students is a must have. It is compartmentalized interiors and exteriors makes it an essential. A college student's backpack provides him or her with greater mobility, while keeping their interior valuables safe.

While there are many choices available in backpacks for your college student, we are unable to endorse any specific one. But we can assist you in making an educated choice for choosing the right one. Have fun.

What Does A Chiropractor Do and How Can One Help Me?

A chiropractor makes a diagnosis of someone suffering from back or neck pain and proposes a form of treatment needed to relieve that problem. The treatment can be in the form of message therapy, exercise or spinal decompression therapy to name a few.

The spine is made up of thirty three bones that are set in a column. Between those bones is a gel like structure known as the spinal disc that causes the back to be flexible. As we age this flexibility diminishes and becomes more rigid. It is the job of the chiropractor to keep these bones, known as the vertebrae aligned and in good health.

The chiropractor, also referred to as a doctor of chiropractic, is one that can alleviate pain from things like herniated discs and other back, neck, nerve and muscle problems stemming from or associated with the back. The chiropractor will diagnose, treat and help relieve back problems by using treatments such as massage, exercise, water treatment or spinal decompression to name a few. If however, the chiropractor feels the patient needs someone that may specialize in their particular problem, a recommendation will be made for the use of that specialist.

The doctor of chiropractic has to go through an extensive program of study in order to become licensed and allowed to practice. To start with; thy must have at least a two year undergraduate degree with in the physical sciences such as biology, chemistry, etc. In some state a four year undergraduate degree is necessary. When the undergraduate degree is awarded then the student must go through a four year program through an accredit school of chiropractic medicine. When the degree is awarded then in order to practice the new doctor must pass an examination by the National Board of Chiropractics. Now a license to practice is awarded. It is obvious from this roster that the chiropractor is a doctor of medicine that focuses on the health and alignment of the spine.

We might add here that the chiropractor is an advocate of insuring treatment without invasive surgery and the use of non invasive treatment and techniques such as we mentioned above. The chiropractor works without the use of injections, drugs or medication to bring temporary or long term relief to a patient suffering with back or neck pain.

There is no age restriction for the treatment of back problems by a chiropractor. From infancy to the elderly senior citizen, anyone with a back or neck problem can be treated by a chiropractor. Surprisingly, colic can be averted with treatment by a chiropractor and back alignment can help and infant with proper growth. As for the senior citizen, the flexibility of the spine cannot be reverted but alignment can make the back pain free and make the person feel fit.

There are many health benefits that are offered by the use of a chiropractor that will also recommend more nutritious diets and exercise in conjunction with the treatment recommended.

Can A Chiropractor Help With A Slipped Disk?

Virtually everyone has heard of a slipped disk. There is a severe amount of pain associated with one so for those who have ever experienced one, it is not something that you are likely to forget. It is also not something that you can allow to linger since it can cause extreme and permanent damage if the situation is not rectified in a timely manner. Fortunately, a chiropractor can work to alleviate the intensity and duration of the pain until the condition has been properly corrected.

What Is A Slipped Disk?

The label of having a "slipped disk" is incorrect since the disk has not actually "slipped". The disks of the spine are the pads that separate and provide a cushion between the bones that make up the spine itself. Disks are fixed in their positions and cannot be moved. However, the softer portion located in the center of the rings can become bulged and extend beyond the outer rings of the spine.

When these areas bulge, they impede on the surrounding tissue and, most importantly, the nerves. This is where the pain originates. Pain can also be caused by a tear.

Where They Can Occur

These types of injuries can occur anywhere within the spine. The most common areas associated with this type of injury are the lower back and the neck. Injuries are usually a result of over-exertion of physical activity or automobile accidents. Even a simple movement can catch the spine off guard and cause injury.

As we age, our bones naturally lose some of their density so this also increases the possibility of injury. Although women can also suffer from them, these types of injuries usually occur in men.

Symptoms

Since the spine is the central highway for nerves running throughout the body, an injury to it can produce discomfort that affects the surrounding area of the spine, the arms or legs and even major organs that are supplied by these specific nerves. The location of the pain depends on which disc has been injured.

Neck discs: The discomfort can manifest as a tingling or numbness, dull ache, a burning sensation or a dull or throbbing pain. Areas that will be affected include the neck, shoulder, upper back around the shoulder blades, arms, hands and/or fingers. There can also be muscle weakness.

Back discs: The same types of pain affecting the lower back, hips, legs and feet.

Treatment

Initial treatment involves alternating ice and heat and using mild pain relievers for the discomfort. As the condition starts to heal, a pain specialist will work with you to strengthen and rehabilitate the area.

Chiropractic Care - History and Origin

Most people would probably think that the chiropractic field is a relatively new method of health treatment compared with conventional medicine. Very few know the actual history of chiropractic, but the truth is that it began long ago and has been successful in improving patients' ailments for thousands of years.

Definition of Chiropractic Care
The term chiropractic comes from the Greek "chiro" meaning hand, and "practic" referring to practice or operation. And in its early days and still today much of chiropractic care involves "hand treatments" to manipulate the spine back into its proper position.

Chiropractors focus on the connection between the alignment of the spine and the functioning of the surrounding muscles and nerves. They emphasize the practice of only noninvasive and natural health care methods.

The Ancient Days
Using the hands and other methods to manipulate the spine dates back all the way to ancient China and Greece. During the time period of 2700 B.C. To 1500 B.C., records were made documenting the use of such chiropractic care by physicians of the day.

And later, around 400 B.C., two Greek contemporaries, Hippocrates and Herodutus both employed the practice to cure their patients. In some of his writings, Hippocrates said, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases."

Daniel David Palmer
Little was heard of chiropractic care in the Western world until 1895, when a man named Daniel David Palmer founded the modern chiropractic profession in Iowa. Palmer had been in the business of magnetic healing until September of 1895 when he had an interesting encounter with a janitor at his office.

The janitor had been deaf for several years. He told Mr Palmer that his hearing loss occurred suddenly one day after he had bent down in an awkward position, and heard a "pop" in his back. Palmer felt the man's back and found a vertebra grossly out of position.

"I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man's hearing should be restored," Palmer recorded in his notes."With this object in view, a half hour's talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever, and soon the man could hear as before."

Soon after this "miraculous" success, Palmer took on a new role, as the first American chiropractor, using spinal realignment techniques to improve everything from the flu to migraine headaches to epilepsy to heart problems.

Palmer once said of his discovery, "I am not the first person to replace subluxated vertebrae, but I do claim to be the first person to replace displaced vertebrae by using the spinous and transverse processes as levers... and to develop the philosophy and science of chiropractic adjustments."

In 1898, he began the Palmer School & Infirmary of Chiropractic to help others take on the role of chiropractor. Since that time, chiropractic care has become one of the largest branches of the medical field with hundreds of new chiropractors graduating each year from accredited colleges and universities.

Ear Pain? Call the Chiropractor!

If you have a young child you have probably been woken up in the night to find your wee one tugging on his ear. He hurts and you call your pediatrician who gets you in the next morning and starts your child on a course of antibiotics. Within a week your child feels great and you think nothing of it until it happens again.

Many parents are unaware of the variety of options available for the treatment of ear infections, the standard 10 day course of amoxicillin is looking less and less appealing. There is the hassle of medication, the recurrence of the ear infection, and the pain until the antibiotics work. More parents are choosing to call their chiropractor first!

Why Chiropractic for Ear Infections?

Quite simply...It works and it's safe. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a watch-and-wait approach, because the evidence-based research about antibiotics is showing that not only are they ineffective at treating ear infections, but they will actually lead to repeated ear infections in your child. In fact a new study published by the American Medical Association showed that antibiotics have little impact on child ear infections.

How Does It Work?

The chiropractic adjustment works by relaxing the neck muscles which allows the Eustachian tubes to drain properly. It rarely takes more than 1 visit. Studies have shown that regular chiropractic care can keep away recurring ear infections. Many children who have been told they needed tubes in their ears are able to avoid surgery, by visiting the chiropractor.

Is It Safe?

It is very safe. In fact, antibiotics have more serious side effects than the chiropractic adjustment including rashes, thrush, stomach aches, etc.

Aren't Antibiotics Just Easier?

Many would say they are (if you can get your child to take them and you remember every single day). However, most ear infections are viral, not bacterial which means that antibiotics won't help and can cause a lot of harm.

If antibiotics are used to treat viral infections such as colds, flu, etc; you body can become conditioned to the antibiotics and then they are less effective at treating bacteria later. Also, you run the risk of creating antibiotic resistant bacteria when you don't take the prescribed course of antibiotics. However, thousands of people die each year from antibiotic-resistant infections.

So next time, you are woken up in the middle of the night, speed dial your chiropractor instead of your pediatrician.

Your Chiropractor and You

Chiropractics is usually defined as a health care approach that is involved in diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders. In Missouri, a good number of chiropractors are handling various chiropractic cases for the relief of most of these disorders. In Maryland Heights spinal decompression can be cured both surgically by a medical doctor or non-surgically by a chiropractic practitioner. The non-surgical procedure is through mechanical traction and is offered it at an affordable price.

To go beyond the expectations of Maryland heights patient, they make sure that all their patients are given the care they need. They have a different approach to health care, and that is through manipulations of the spine which, in chiropractics, is believed to be the center of almost all mechanical discomforts one feels. In Maryland heights herniated disc problems can be diagnosed through physical exams, x-rays and other medical exams needed to aid the chiropractic in devising a plan of care.

You may believe chiropractics will relieve your condition but this should not be a reason for you not to visit your doctor for regular checkups. Choosing your chiropractor is not that easy because there are many unqualified and unlicensed practitioners out there. They could easily become a big problem for you if you are continually seeking their services.

Before seeking chiropractic care, have the problem evaluated by the doctor first. But when you are in the care of a licensed chiropractor, you should obey what he tells you to do as it is for your own good. If you doubt your chiropractors' diagnosis, you can always ask for a second opinion. Also make it a habit to write questions you want to ask as these will help enlighten you on the many doubts you may have about the way you feel, your illness and the ways to eliminate them.

The chiropractor you visit must have the right training and education. There are many colleges that offer a course on chiropractics but if you are interested in pursuing a career in this field, make sure you are determined enough and serious about providing the best service and highest level of expertise you can offer. Many people will be depending on you and they need your help. You cannot fail yourself nor the people who will be coming to you for assistance regarding their health care needs.

Don't Space Out

The impact of spaced repetition on the mind and your memory was originally applied to teaching and learning. Flash cards are an example of spaced repetition. Spaced repetition continues be utilized in learning because...

...it works!

Advertising and marketing is another form of "teaching." Your marketing seeks to teach people about your brand of chiropractic and to become a part of the "students" subconscious mind which will enable the person to recall your brand of chiropractic first and foremost when the need for your services arises.

Here's a little quiz. Just fill in the blanks:

* I can't believe it's not [ ]
* Melts in your mouth, not in your [ ].
* Just do [ ].
* The breakfast of [ ].

I could list many more, but you get the idea. Most of you reading this article will have completed the quiz with a score of 100%. Certainly cultural proof that spaced marketing works in marketing.

Our mind response to images and to a lesser extent words. If I say "Ball" your mind will retrieve the dominate information you have stored over the years that represents your thoughts about a "ball." If you are a golfer, then a golf ball will pop up instantly. If you are more into football, then a football will come to life.

When I say the word "chiropractic," what image or thoughts come up in the minds of the people in your marketplace? In the minds of your patients? In the minds of your employees?" For someone in a third-world, isolated island, the word would most likely have zero meaning.

Because of the images, t.v. ads can be more impactful than radio. However, because radio ads are much less costly, you can repeat your message and create the recall on a smaller budget.

Images are highly effective in print and direct mail marketing. But, you must use spaced repetition to deliver the intended message to as many people as possible. And, the wrong image can be counterproductive.

You can maximize the effectiveness of your marketing when you do it consistently using spaced repetition principles that the world's most successful companies have incorporated into their marketing plans.

The principle behind spaced repetition is simple: the best time to repeat a message is just before the message if forgotten.

The frequency and recency of your marketing will have a definite correlation to your results. The Prospex in your marketplace are like a moving parade. They are bombarded by messages from a wide source of companies who are vying for the Prospex to purchase their product or service.

The amount of frequency and recency is different for a Chiropreneur located in a town with only one chiropractor, than one located in an area with 100. However, even in a town of one, marketing is still vital, as the news media or other health care providers may be influencing the mindset of the Prospex with their spaced repetitive messages.

Another key component of a spaced repetition system (SRS) is consistency. A set of flash cards doesn't change. When you learn a new language they don't change how you say "My name is..." Consistency is the fastest way to learn something new.

The same is true with marketing. You must be consistent with the message, the design, the theme, the images, the logo and slogan. Consistency is king. Variation is the enemy.

Studies have shown that it can take 12-20 to become embedded in the mind of the consumer and up to eight years to own the "image" or "word." This doesn't mean running 15 ads.... it mans that the SAME Prospex saw or heard your specific message. This is why a brand like McDonald's will run their messages on radio, t.v., billboards, in newspaper, magazines and mailers because they want to embed their message as quickly as possible and when you get hungry, you will at least consider them when it is time to satisfy your hunger. They have no idea when YOU will be hungry... thus, they must run their message with frequency and recency.

Now, you cannot compete with the likes of McDonal's and the good news is that you don't. But a weekly article in your local paper over the course of years will have a profound impact in the recall of your brand of chiropractic... when they or someone they know needs a chiropractic.

But, another method is to attract as many Prospex from your marketing, such as screenings, lectures, direct mail and media advertising to build a massive list of addresses or email and then you can use frequency and recency to embed your message with a large segment of the Prospex in your marketplace.

The key to effective and impactful marketing is SRS. Consistency is king. Variation is the enemy. Don't make the mistake that the CEO of one of my Fortune 500 clients made. During a meeting with the marketing department, the CEO wondered in and spotted some "ads" laying on the table. Being a leader he challenged the group, "When are we going to stop using the same old ad and come up with something new?"

The ad in question had never been ran in any publication! The meeting was the final plan to launch the campaign, but, because he had seen it so many times, he thought it was old.

Remember, just because you may tire of an ad, doesn't mean the marketplace has... most may have never seen it once let alone 20 times.
