How a Chiropractor Can Help to Prevent Your Baby Suffering From Colic

Coping with a baby that is suffering from colic is exhausting and worrying for a new parent. If your baby is irritable and crying for long periods of time, your baby may be diagnosed as suffering from colic. Babies that have colic may cry uncontrollably for periods of three or more hours a day, and this condition usually lasts for a minimum of three days and can last as long as three weeks. One way of helping a baby, who is suffering from colic, is to take them to see a chiropractor.

The Hard Task of Coming into the World

Your baby's body suffers tremendous stretching and compression while passing through the birth canal. The natural process of being born causes a baby's head to rotate by 90 degrees and contractions squeeze the baby's body. This causes stress to the baby and this stress combined with the weight of the baby's head puts pressure on the baby's neck and spine.

It is possible for a baby to experience a spinal misalignment during the process of being born. If this occurs, your baby may become more susceptible to colic. Even babies that are born by C-sections can suffer from spinal misalignment.

A baby's digestive system can be affected if a misalignment occurs during the birth process. Your baby may have difficulty in digesting breast milk or formula. Your child may arch their back, clench their fists, or pull their legs towards the abdomen. Babies with colic will often cry for hours at a time, usually in the late afternoon or in the early evening. A visit to a chiropractor can help prevent your baby suffering from colic.

Your Baby may Benefit from a Visit to a Chiropractor

In 1999, The Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics published a study of babies suffering from colic. Babies who were treated with spinal manipulation, by a chiropractor, showed a 67% decrease in their crying after a period of two weeks. On the other hand, babies who received a drug, instead of spinal manipulation, showed only a reduction of 38%.

Most parents would prefer not to give their young babies a drug if the baby can be successfully treated by spinal manipulation. A chiropractor can assess your child and make the adjustments necessary to ensure any misalignment in your baby is corrected. The adjustments made to a small baby are very gentle. The chiropractor will apply gentle pressure to areas on your baby's neck and back.

There is no need to be concerned when your baby is being treated by a chiropractor. The chiropractor uses less finger pressure on your baby than you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. You may see an immediate improvement in your baby's demeanour as the misalignments are adjusted and your baby is less likely to suffer from colic in the future. Because it is impossible for your baby to tell you what is causing their pain, it is comforting for you as a parent to know that a chiropractor is a highly trained professional who can help your baby to feel better. If your baby suffers from colic, they may benefit from a visit to a chiropractor.
