Chiropractor for Sciatica and Other Pain

At some point in your life you may contact a chiropractor for sciatica. Symptoms of sciatica may include pain, burning or tingling down the leg, weakness or difficulty moving the leg a sharp shooting pain that makes it hard to stand up. Sciatica is usually confined to only one side of the lower body, but the pain can be very severe and debilitating. Chiropractic treatments may involve manual adjustments that correct a spinal misalignment so that the blockage that is responsible for pinching the sciatic nerve is removed. Ultrasound, massage and ice therapies may also be used to reduce the muscle spasms and pain associated with sciatica. These treatments do not make use of medication or surgery which is a good thing.

Many people seek help from a chiropractor for lower back pain that is nonspecific and not associated with the sciatic nerve. The treatment usually consists of spinal manipulation which is a specific therapy that involves moving a joint just beyond the usual range of motion. Often a popping sound or cracking noise can be heard during this adjustment. It reduces pain and increases mobility, and it can help prevent chronic pain that is associated with immobility. Every year 1 in 4 American adults suffer from lower back pain that compels them to see a chiropractor.

When the spine is not properly aligned, the nerves may become irritated, pinched or inflamed. This is a condition called vertebral subluxation which can lead to pain, illness and disease. People go to a chiropractor for subluxation so that the nerve interference can be removed. The doctors typically use x-rays along with a physical exam to detect these spinal misalignments or subluxations. Documented physical signs and symptoms include abnormal range of motion, pain and tenderness and tissue changes. Treatment focuses on a High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) thrust to the affected spinal segments. Sometimes a spinal decompression machine is used.

Most chiropractors routinely treat sports injuries such as tendonitis, back strains, hamstring injuries, ankle or foot sprains, neck stingers and acromioclavicular (AC) joint separation. Many certified sports chiropractors treat high level professional athletes from the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), and Major League Baseball (MLB). Even colleges and universities have a designated team chiropractor for their collegiate sports. Many famous athletes such as cyclist Lance Armstrong, golf pro Tiger Woods and Olympic champion speed skater Derek Parra promote chiropractic care.
